A local charity is providing breakfast to students at Victor Scott Primary and Pre-School every Friday throughout the school year.

A statement said the schools are the newest recipients of Bermuda Is Love’s free breakfast programme, which also provides complimentary morning meals to students at Elliot Primary School every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and Harrington Sound Primary School on Thursdays.

The programme, based on the belief that food is a human right, allows every student at these schools to receive breakfast foods such as bacon, fried and scrambled eggs, cereal and fresh fruit without needing to register or pay.

Aaron Crichlow, the founder of Bermuda Is Love, said: “Providing breakfast is about much more than putting food on a table.

“When a child comes to school hungry, that can affect their ability to concentrate, participate and learn.

“Making sure children have access to food is one of the most basic things we can do to support their education and wellbeing.

“We believe meeting basic human needs must be part of building a just society.”

George Barbieri, Bermuda Is Love trustee, said: “Every breakfast we serve is the result of people coming together around a simple belief: children should not go hungry at school.

“None of this happens because of one organisation; it happens because people and institutions decide that feeding children is something worth supporting.

“We are incredibly grateful to every donor who has helped us get to this point, from major institutional supporters to individuals who have contributed what they could.”

Mr Barbieri also thanked La Trattoria for providing breakfasts to students at Victor Scott and Elliot Primary, and Rosewood Bermuda for catering for Harrington Sound Primary.

Mr Crichlow said Bermuda Is Love hopes to expand the programme until “every child in Bermuda can count on having access to a healthy meal at school”.

He added: “Our hope is that we are demonstrating through these programmes what can eventually become part of a universal school meals system across Bermuda.”
