Bermuda’s Concacaf Nations League campaign has taken on added significance for Nahki Wells.

At the of age 36, the Luton Town striker knows the upcoming Group B League B fixtures against Guadeloupe, St Lucia and Barbados could well be one of his final chances to play in a Bermuda shirt, and he is determined to make the most of the opportunity as the Gombey Warriors attempt to qualify for the Gold Cup for a second time.

“I think when you know the end is a bit closer you really start to appreciate it, and for me that's the mindset going into these sets of games, that they may be my last for Bermuda,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“But I really want to enjoy it, really make the most of it and really want to win the games. One more push at potentially another Gold Cup run and another push to group A is the objective, and I am looking forward to these games.”

The experienced player joins the national team in prolific form with five goals under his belt in all competitions for Sky Bet League One side Luton Town so far this season.

“I'm in good form. I’m excited and hungry, and hopefully I can do that like I have done for the most part in the past,” he said.

The Gombey Warriors begin their Concacaf Nations League campaign against Guadeloupe in St Lucia on Friday.

That match will be the first competitive match for Bermuda under new head coach John Barry Nusum, who has taken over the reins after the departure of Canadian Michael Findlay.

Wells is looking forward to playing under former Philadelphia KiXX forward Nusum.

“It’s a new chapter and a new manager in JB, who is somebody I have a great relationship with and somebody who has been very impactful and involved in Michael Findlay's run,” he said.

“I always felt he would get an opportunity, so I am quite excited for that and ready to play my part in these games.”

All matches are being played at centralised venues, a format change introduced in the last edition to reduce travel demand and support Member Associations in delivering the highest possible standards of competition.

After the first two matches in this window, Bermuda will travel to Barbados to play the home nation twice on October 2 and 5.

The four group winners will automatically advance to the Gold Cup, with the two best runners-up entering the Gold Cup preliminary round.

Group winners will also be promoted to League A of the Nations League, while fourth-place finishers will be relegated to League C.

Under former coach Kyle Lightbourne, Bermuda made their debut at the 2019 Gold Cup, where they bowed out at the group stage after suffering 2-1 defeats by Costa Rica and Haiti before a 2-0 win over Nicaragua capped an outstanding campaign.
