Nahki Wells retains Gold Cup ambitions

Nahki Wells has not given up hope of qualifying for the Gold Cup despite Bermuda losing their opening two Concacaf Nations League games against Guadeloupe and St Lucia.

The Gombey Warriors find themselves anchored at the bottom of League B Group B and are the only team without a point heading into a double-header against Barbados.

But while their chances of qualifying for the Gold Cup for the second time already look slim, Luton Town striker Wells said the squad is not ready to throw in the towel just yet, and are hoping to get their campaign on track in their upcoming matches against Barbados on Friday and Monday.

“We know we need points. We know we need to win these games and the intent is still to win the group, go directly to Gold Cup and get back into League A,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“Mathematically, that’s still possible and I don’t see why we wouldn’t be able to. But we have to put out better performances and we have to be harder to beat as a team, so I think that will be the objective going into the next game.

“We have Barbados over two legs and it’s about a response that is going to help us to get three points. That’s been the emphasis the entire time and we’ve just fallen a bit short, but that’s football.

“We have reset, re-evaluated what went wrong, what went right and we will try and put that emphasis into the next game, which is a quick turnaround in a couple of days.

“Everyone is obviously extremely disappointed. But we have hashed over it, let it go and moved on to the next plan, which is to beat Barbados over two legs and get ourselves back into the mix points-wise for the final two matches of the group.”

Bermuda’s campaign got off to a rocky start after being edged 2-1 against unbeaten group leaders Guadeloupe. Their qualifying hopes then took another hit after suffering a 5-2 defeat by St Lucia.

Wells, who is in the final year of his contract at Sky Bet League One side Luton, felt the scoreline was not a fair reflection of the match.

“I feel as if we were in the game, had a lot of control in the game and didn’t feel like it was a match we deserved to lose by that deficit,” he said.

“We had more moments than the scoreline probably looks like. Myself and others should’ve got a couple of goals, which would’ve made a difference.

“But it was always tough having to claw back such a heavy scoreline after being too easy to score against for the most part of that game, so it’s disappointment in that regard. Hugely disappointed in the outcome.”

Wells was substituted in the 90th minute just moments after suffering leg cramp but is expected to retain his place in John Barry Nusum’s squad for the matches against Barbados.

“I am not injured. I had bad cramp and will be involved in the next game,” he said.

Centre back Jorj Dublin and full back Lejaun Simmons are also expected to return to the starting line-up after serving one-game suspensions for being sent off against Guadeloupe.
