Bermuda will look to get off the mark in the Concacaf Nations League when they face Barbados tonight (9pm Bermuda time).

After back-to-back defeats by Guadeloupe and St Lucia, John Barry Nusum’s side head to the Barbados Football Association Technical Centre looking to pick up points and stay within touching distance of the other teams in the group.

“Losing the first two matches puts us in a bad position, so we definitely need to get three points out of this match,” Nusum told The Royal Gazette.

“That’s what the group is focused on, trying to put in that performance that can bring us three points.

“There was a lot of disappointment the other night. It comes down to accountability from everyone — coaches, staff and players.

“We know what position we’re in and we understand that we have to get a job done in these two matches.

“The vibe is very positive in the group. The group’s looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to getting the ship right, so that’s a good thing.”

Despite sitting six places below Bermuda at 30th in the Concacaf rankings, Barbados will provide stern opposition and they sit top of the group after defeating St Lucia 2-0 and playing out a 2-2 draw with Guadeloupe.

“Barbados are a very good team and we’re going to try to negate the strengths and play to ours,” the Bermuda coach said.

“We have two games to see what they look like. They play in a 3-4-3, so we understand where their movements are and how they play.

“We just have to make sure that we don’t allow them to be in spaces that they want to find success in and we make them predictable.

“Offensively, we’ve got to make sure that we turn our possession into opportunities and shots. In the last game we had 60 per cent ball possession but didn’t get enough shots in the final third.

“If we get the possession, we have to use it better in the final third to get something out of it or to make it count.

“We have to be more ruthless in that sense and then defensively we have to be in a better position so that they can’t counter-attack and hurt us.”

Nusum has been boosted by the return of full back Lejaun Simmons, who is available again after serving his suspension for being sent off in the opener against Guadeloupe.

While Simmons returns, Jorj Dublin remains unavailable after Concacaf handed him a two-match ban for his straight red card in the same game.

“It was a big miss in the second game having Lejaun Simmons and Jorj Dublin out,” Nusum said.

“I wish we could have Jorj back as well, but that’s one of the Concacaf realities we just have to deal with.

“It’s unfortunate because it wasn’t a red-card situation, but apparently they gave him two games as opposed to one.

“They said it was a severe red card, which wasn't even close and it was a yellow card at best. He’ll miss the next match and then be ready for the last game of the tour.

“We’ve got Lejaun back, so it’d be good to have a senior player back in the group. He is one of our main defenders too and was a major miss for us the other night.

“Everyone’s fit and healthy, so that’s a good thing for us as we seek to bounce back.”
