Dailey victorious as hundreds turn out for PartnerRe Women’s 5K

Christine Dailey put on a dominant display to capture the PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run at the Botanical Gardens on Sunday.

Dailey, who finished third while heavily pregnant last year, looked far more comfortable as she crossed the line in 18min 54.84sec to regain a title she last won in 2023.

Second place went to teenager Brooklyn Myers in a personal best 19:47.39, ahead of Stepanka Sprincova in 19:50.84.

“I’m very happy to win this race as I haven’t won it in a few years,” Dailey told The Royal Gazette.

“I’m training for the Philadelphia Half-Marathon in November so I just started a training block. I’m starting to increase my mileage and I’m feeling good for now.

“It was a nice test in the middle of a training block for me. It was a beautiful day of racing, a little bit hot but perfect.”

The seasoned runner was delighted to have younger competitors such as Myers and Evelyn Fahy push her.

“It was great to see Brooklyn Myers in second place,” the 39-year-old said.

“This is an exciting race because a lot of the teenagers do it. It’s fun to see who’s faster and they always put you to work.

“Honestly, I went off the line and I never looked back, I just ran. I didn’t know what was going on behind me and didn’t even look at my watch.”

Myers bettered the 20:15 she ran in December at the Red Cross Jingle Bell Run and Walk. Last year, the Bermuda High School for Girls student was tenth in the PartnerRe 5K.

“It was really surprising for me to get second, but I’m really happy about it because I’ve trained really hard for this,” the 15-year-old said.

“I really felt good heading into the race. It was super hot and I knew it was going to be challenging.

“When the race started, all I was thinking about was just trying to stay with the senior runners as much as I could.

“I ran with my friend Evelyn Fahy for the majority of the time. We just kind of stayed in the pack with them for as long as we possibly could.

“When Christine Dailey took off, I didn’t really see her until I finished, so I was like, ‘OK, she’s out of sight’.

Mylah DeSilva won the 7-14 girls 2K Run ahead of Madeleine Friend (Photograph by Diamond Dill)

“I just tried to stick behind her or as close as I could to her without burning myself out early on in the race.”

Sprincova, who was fifth last year in 20:58, was pleased to break 20 minutes.

“I love this race and I’m just very happy with how it went,” she said.

“I’m happy that I did sub-20, because this is a challenging course. I knew Christine was going to win, there was no question about it.

“I was hoping that she might have a bad day, but Christine never has a bad day. I was also hoping to stay with her, but she’s just too fast and incredible.

“Brooklyn was in front of me at the beginning and I caught up with her on Middle Road, just coming up the hill.

“We just raced with each other towards the end and she had more power coming down the finishing line. Well done for her for being strong at the end.”

The day started with a tight finish in the girls 10-14 2K Run, in which Mylah DeSilva clinched first in 7:11.38, just ahead of Madeleine Friend in 7:11.47.

“I feel like I accomplished something,” DeSilva said.

“I think just sticking with someone in the end helped a little bit. The race was exhausting as I haven't done a mile in a long time yet, but it felt refreshing in the end.”

Edwina Arorash, who has run in the race since its inception in 1998, was the oldest competitor and the lone entrant in the 70+ category. She finished 146th overall in 41:05.10.

“I did say it years ago that one day I’ll be the oldest runner and that has become true,” the 70-year-old said.

“I took this race not too seriously. I took it to enjoy it because I knew it was hot out there.

“I had to walk the hills because it was too hot to run, but I finished well because the finish was downhill.

“The time wasn’t my personal best but it’s good enough for a 70-year-old. I’ll continue running this race as long as my body allows me to.”
