New exhibit to be displayed at Masterworks
Work by six artists from across the Atlantic will be displayed at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art from this week.
A statement said Atlantic Voices, presented by Masterworks and Black Pony Gallery, features work from Bermudian-based artists Charles Zuill, Meredith Andrews and Abi Box, Bahamians Jason A Bennett and Sue Katz and Leonor (Loope) Almeida Pereira, from the Azores.
Mr Zuill’s work is rooted in experimentation and highlights his interests in nature, science and art history, while Ms Andrews’ art explores the relationships between people, place and the environment.
Paintings by Ms Box, who is based between London and Bermuda, comprise layered surfaces that balance spaciousness and spontaneity and Ms Pereira’s pieces explore memory, identity and the island environment.
Mr Bennett uses maps, topography and organic forms to explore the human experience and Ms Katz’s work showcases identity, memory and connection.
The statement said: “At the heart of Atlantic Voices is the idea of the Atlantic as more than a geographic boundary — It is a continuous body of water and a vast archipelagic region shaped by history, knowledge, movement, economic exchange and cultural connection.
“The exhibition creates space for each artist to contribute to the contemporary art discourse from their own island perspective, demonstrating the diversity and strength of contemporary voices across the Caribbean Mid-Atlantic.”
Lisa Howie, Black Pony Gallery founder and creative director, said: “This group show is at the heart of Black Pony Gallery’s journey, celebrating inter-island creative connections, participating in regional contemporary art discourse and broadening relationships across our archipelago and beyond.
“As a gallerist and collector, my passion for art and creativity is deeply intertwined with my connection to the artists I work with.”
Atlantic Vocies will be on display in the Rick Faries Gallery from Friday, when an opening reception will take place from 5.30pm to 7pm, until December 5.
A talk featuring Mr Zuill and Ms Box is scheduled from 5.30pm to 7pm on October 15 and another talk with Ms Andrews will take place on October 22, also from 5.30pm to 7pm.
