Sustenance, a sustainability consultancy serving re/insurers and other financial institutions, has been launched by sustainability professional, Venetia Furbert.

The new company has been developed by the climate risk expert to help organisations integrate sustainability into their business.

Ms Furbert’s background includes environmental, social, and governance analytics at S&P Global. ESG is a set of criteria used by investors and organisations to measure a company's ethical impact, sustainability and risk management.

Ms Furbert, who previously worked in climate risk in London, told The Royal Gazettein an earlier interview that ESG is about more than corporate responsibility.

She started out as a reinsurance claims adjuster in Bermuda in 2011, before becoming a financial lines underwriter

Her latest venture is centred around two complementary pathways: sustainability management and innovation.

She commented: “Organisations are increasingly being asked to think about sustainability not simply in terms of reporting, but in terms of how it influences strategy, risk, resilience and long-term value.

“Sustenance was created to help organisations move from ambition to practical action, to build the strategy and systems that give sustainability substance while creating room for innovation.”

What began as an idea gradually became a defined approach to helping organisations connect sustainability with the way they make decisions, manage risk and create value, she said.

Launching Sustenance on the island has particular significance for Ms Furbert, who describes the jurisdiction as the market that helped shape her professional career.

She said Bermuda’s risk transfer sector operates at the intersection of global risk, capital and resilience. Here, she said, there is an opportunity for sustainability to become increasingly connected to broader strategic and commercial conversations.

She added: “Bermuda has innovation in its DNA. This is the market that raised me professionally, and I want Sustenance to contribute to how we think about sustainability here, not as something sitting on the edge of the business, but as part of how organisations prepare, adapt and create long-term value.”

The company launch comes ahead of the ILS Bermuda Convergence 2026, October 12-14, where Sustenance will engage with industry participants around resilience, sustainability and innovation.
