Former ‘Hurricane Hunters’ head to speak at ILS conference
A three-star American admiral and former senior leader within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will pull the curtains back this week on the scientific and regulatory agency responsible for monitoring weather, oceans and fisheries across the United States.
During the ILS Convergence 2026, Vice-Admiral Nancy Hann, a former leader of the famed Hurricane Hunters programme, will deliver a keynote address, “Lessons from the Eye of the Storm”.
The retired officer will discuss how NOAA’s aircraft, vessels and scientific teams have ventured into some of the world’s most extreme environments to gather the data that underpins weather forecasting and catastrophe preparedness.
The former senior leader within NOAA will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the missions, technology and people helping society better understand and prepare for risk.
Delegates at the three-day conference, which starts today, will also hear about the new generation of risk modelling and analytics firms broadening how the industry understands risk through new models, cloud-native technology, high-resolution hazard data, machine learning and more transparent approaches.
One session will showcase how firms operating across the evolving modelling ecosystem compare their outputs and make better-informed decisions under uncertainty.
Another discussion will deal with El Niño and La Nina — as influences during hurricane season.
