Wider impact of gun violence highlighted after shooting
A grief recovery specialist has called for the community to come together after a reported firearms incident on Sunday morning left a man in hospital with a serious head wound.
Details remain limited following the shooting, which is understood to have occurred in the early hours at a home in Hamilton Parish.
Police were sent to the scene at about 1.35am where they were informed that unknown people shot into a window at the residence.
The last information from the Bermuda Police Service was that a man was receiving treatment for a serious head wound at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Gina Spence-Virgil, an advanced grief recovery specialist and founder of the Gina Spence Programme, a grief and mourning charity, said hearts were “heavy” that “another young life has been impacted by gun violence”.
“Bermuda is already grieving,” she said.
“Our island has experienced tremendous loss in recent weeks from the devastating plane crash and another road fatality to families facing illness, bereavement, displacement and other deeply personal losses.”
She added: “We extend our heartfelt prayers to the victim … and to their family, friends and everyone affected by this traumatic incident.
“As a grief recovery specialist, I know that incidents like these leave invisible wounds, fear that may have no words, trauma that cannot always be seen and a loss of safety in the very communities we call home.
“We cannot allow violence to become normal in Bermuda.
“This is a time for us to come together with compassion, care and action, not only for this family but for a community carrying layers of grief and trauma.
“We pray for the victim’s recovery and for strength for their loved ones. And we remain committed to walking alongside those impacted by violence, grief and traumatic loss.
“No heart should grieve alone.”
Wayne Furbert, the MP for Hamilton West (Constituency 6), added: “I was very sad to hear that this incident took place.
“I pray that this thing does not happen again in Hamilton Parish. This is a very strong family area where people know each other.”
The government MP said he looked forward to police conducting their investigations and bringing those responsible to justice.
Jarion Richardson, the Shadow Minister of National Security, said: “My thoughts are with the man injured in Sunday morning’s shooting in Hamilton Parish, his family and everyone affected. I hope for his full recovery.
“The report that shots were fired through the window of a home is deeply disturbing. People must be able to feel safe in their own homes.
“The consequences of gun violence reach far beyond the person injured.
“Families are left frightened, neighbours anxious and entire communities wondering whether they will be next.”
He thanked emergency services for their response and encouraged residents to share any relevant information with investigating officers.
The One Bermuda Alliance MP added that he “expects” the Government to explain how its efforts to reduce gun violence are being assessed and what results are being delivered.
“We cannot allow shootings to become an accepted part of life in Bermuda.
“Our responsibility is to support those affected, help bring those responsible to justice and insist on sustained action that makes our communities safer.”
The Ministry of National Security said it was in contact with the Bermuda Police Service.
Police have encouraged anyone with information that could help the investigation to call Acting Detective Inspector Anneka Donawa, of the BPS serious crime unit, on 717-2250 or e-mail adonawa@bps.bm.
