Two young Bermudians are preparing for a ten-week international expedition to Borneo and Malaysia this month.

Sam Heath-Wolsak, 18, and Iziah Tucker, 24, are taking part in the Raleigh Bermuda programme that aims to challenge them physically, mentally and socially through outdoor experiences and teamwork, as well as community and environmental projects.

Over the past several months, the pair have participated in Raleigh Bermuda's Venturer training programme, developing skills in leadership, survival, teamwork, emotional resilience and cultural awareness.

Their preparation has included survival camps, practical skills training, fundraising and personal development activities.

Mr Heath-Wolsak said he was ready to explore unfamiliar territory and discover the limits of his capabilities.

“I’m especially looking forward to seeing another part of the world and experiencing plants, animals and cultures that are completely new to me,” he said.

“I just graduated high school and wanted to take a year off to work and volunteer.

“I hope this experience will help me to understand who I am and prepare me for university.”

Mr Tucker added: “I’m most excited about experiencing Borneo’s wildlife and natural environment.

“Through Raleigh, I’ve already developed my social skills, learnt how to interact with others through team activities and gained practical skills, including using Trangia [portable stove] cooking equipment.

“I’m looking forward to exploring Borneo, swimming and seeing the wildlife up close.”

The trip will run until December. Upon returning to Bermuda, both will take part in post-expedition development activities to reflect on their experiences and explore how they can apply their learning to future goals.

Denae Burchall, the executive director of Raleigh Bermuda, said: “Raleigh is about giving young people opportunities to challenge themselves, discover what they are capable of and develop a stronger sense of direction.

“Sam and Iziah have both worked hard throughout their training and we are excited to see them take this next step.

“We hope their journey will inspire other young Bermudians to consider the programme, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to opportunities like this.”
