All to play for as early start in store at Port Royal
The final round at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship on Sunday will start earlier than usual as a result of inclement weather.
With high winds forecast over the next 24 to 48 hours, tournament organisers have brought forward Sunday’s tee times, with the players scheduled to start their rounds between 7.45am and 9.46am and from two tees.
An update is expected to be released at 6am with regards to gate opening times and spectators are asked not to travel to Port Royal until times have been confirmed.
With winds forecast to be gale strength at times on Sunday, the inclement weather could lead to the assessment of temporary hospitality structures, with those holding tickets for Sunday allowed to use them on Saturday as organisers kept a close eye on the radar.
The tournament remains wide open with joint leaders Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman clinging to a two-shot advantage over the rest of the field through 54 holes at Port Royal Golf Course.
American Smotherman shot 66 for the second straight day during Saturday’s third round, which was contested in blustery conditions, to grasp the clubhouse lead after overnight joint-leaders Kensei Hirata and Chandler Blanchet fell off the pace.
He was later joined at the summit by Power, the 2022 champion, who shot 67 playing in the final group that teed off on the front nine to remain on course to become the first two-times winner in the tournament’s history.
Two shots back at 14 under are Taylor Moore, Corey Conners and Ben Silverman.
Tom Hoge, Chris Kirk, Chan Kim, Danny Walker and Chandler Blanchet are tied for sixth at 13 under, three shots off the lead.
Cam Davis, Luke Clanton, Isaiah Salinda and Greyson Sigg are one shot further back, tied for 11th at 12 under.
With 16 players within five shots of the overnight lead, it is anyone’s guess who will walk away with the winner’s cheque of $1.08 million dollars.
Last year’s winner Adam Schenk was among those missing the cut, which also included Bermuda’s Nick Jones and Camiko Smith.
