Look closely at employment agencies

Edward Ball Jr

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my deep concern about a troubling trend in our local job market: the evasion of immigration and work permit law/regulations. It appears some employers believe they can bypass the laws of Bermuda by hiding behind third-party employment agencies.

In these scenarios, the agency acts merely as a “front”. Their only objective is to push through their corporate clients’ directives – even if it means quietly rescinding initial job offers to qualified Bermudians to clear a path for foreign nationals.

This practice brings the entire concept of corporate goodwill into question. When a company deliberately attempts to falsify its hiring needs and bypass local regulations, it prioritises corporate interests over the legal framework of Bermuda immigration regulations. Respecting the laws of the Bermuda should not be optional or subject to manipulation.

We cannot allow loopholes to undermine the integrity of our Immigration regime and disadvantage our own people. It is time to scrutinise these practices more closely to ensure fairness for all Bermudian workers.
