MP seeks answers on bus service to Dockyard
The Shadow Minister of Transport is seeking answers from the Government over the bus service to Dockyard on holidays and weekends.
Craig Cannonier said recent concerns expressed by a resident “highlight a genuine problem for people who depend on public transportation to get to work”.
It came after a former doctor pleaded for an improved public transportation to the West End location.
Mr Cannonier said while the Ministry of Transport has indicated that ridership and operational assessments did not justify additional services, the public should be given an explanation on how that conclusion was reached.
The One Bermuda Alliance MP said: “I am asking the minister to clarify: what research and passenger data were used to determine that additional services are not warranted? Which employers, shift workers and organisations in Dockyard were consulted?
“Has the Department of Public Transportation ever trialled earlier or later Sunday and holiday services to establish actual demand?
“We cannot simply assume there is no demand when the service people need is not available.”
He said public transportation must serve working Bermudians, adding that he hoped Owen Darrell, the transport minister of transport, will address the issue next week in the House of Assembly on the decision taken and alternatives considered.
The transport ministry said present data showed there was not enough demand for early morning and evening services.
It said the Department of Public Transportation will review the issue if travel patterns change and demand increase to levels that support additional services.
