New Commissioner of Education sought in re-run advert
The Government has advertised for a new Commissioner of Education to lead the island’s public school system “at a significant time in its transformation”, according to a newspaper advertisement.
The candidate must be able to strengthen teaching and learning, lead complex change, build organisational and leadership capability and translate strategy into measurable and sustained improvement for students, the notice said.
The advertisement in The Royal Gazette came more than two months after Kalmar Richards retired from the post.
A notice for the position was advertised in May and listed the annual salary of the post as $193,382.83.
Ms Richards’s retirement was announced in August as the Ministry of Education named members of its new Board of Education.
She had served more than 40 years in public education.
During her time as commissioner, Ms Richards led the island’s public schools through Covid-19 as pupils transitioned to remote learning and later returned to the classroom.
Work to reform Bermuda’s education system has been a significant area of discussion as the Government sought to turn the island’s three-tier system into a two-tier structure.
The next commissioner’s mandate includes having the ability to lead system transformation, and work with the Government, the Board of Education and relevant partners to develop the governance, leadership and organisational structure required for the future.
The successful applicant will be tasked with building a high-performing team and create a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
The deadline for the submission of applications is November 13.
