Nahki Wells to miss vital Bermuda fixtures

Bermuda will be without the valuable services of Nahki Wells for the Concacaf Nations League matches against Guadeloupe and St Lucia this month.

The Luton Town striker has confirmed he is unavailable for the crucial fixtures after deciding to prioritise recovery and time with family in the wake of a demanding schedule at club and international level with Bermuda in the Caribbean last month.

“I am not available for Nations League as I just want to prioritise time to recover and spend time with my family,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s been a tough turnaround with games back to back, so for the health of my body I am prioritising that.”

National coach John Barry Nusum was hoping to retain the 36-year-old’s services for the upcoming commitments but understands the reasons behind Wells’s decision.

“We had a chat and Nahki is in a professional space, which means that he has to make certain decisions,” Nusum said.

“Part of it is where he is with his club and the other part of it where we are with our development and getting younger guys in, so it’s a little bit of everything involved.

“At the end of the conversation we thought it would be best for him to stay with the club and staying tuned in on that side of it, and for us we can get some younger guys in and see players that we haven't seen before.

“Do we want Nahki? Absolutely. But he won't be involved and will get to be able to spend a little more time with his family. That’s one of things he hasn’t been able to do because he has to travel for playing. We had a conversation about it and he’s not going to join us for this window.”

Wells has been in sparkling form lately, with three recent goals for Luton taking his season’s tally to eight.

Bermuda have lost all four of their League B Group B fixtures against Guadeloupe, St Lucia and Barbados, and are anchored at the bottom of the table with no points.

With their hopes of qualifying for a second Gold Cup already dashed, the Gombey Warriors will now attempt to avoid relegation, with victories in their final two matched against Guadeloupe and St Lucia essential if they have any hope of avoiding the drop.
