Donations for Ehsan top $13,000

I’m grateful!: Ehsan Smith Perinchief has spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy

A GoFundMe drive set up to raise money to buy equipment for a child with cerebral palsy has surpassed its target.

A crowdfunding campaign online for Ehsan Smith Perinchief, who is almost 2, and has spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, a condition that limits the movement of his arms and legs, had a goal of $13,000.

The fundraising drive hit its target late last week and by yesterday afternoon a total of $14,250 had been raised.

Alyssa Smith, Ehsan’s mother, said she was overcome by emotion when the fundraising page hit its mark. She said: “Initially I cried because I couldn’t believe it.”

Ehsan’s parents set up the page to buy equipment to help him, including a stand frame, a walker and an adaptive stroller.

A fundraising fun day is also to be held at Warwick Workmen’s Club on a week on Saturday.

Ms Smith said the achievement was “a relief”.

She added: “Every parent wants to provide the best life for their child, and to know that Ehsan can now have access to the best equipment makes us very happy.

“This equipment will provide Ehsan with the chance to become more independent, while simultaneously helping him to build up his strength and confidence in himself.”

Ms Smith said the family would head back to Boston to have the equipment fitted and assembled before it was shipped to Bermuda.

She added: “Once it’s here, the sky’s the limit for Ehsan.

“We refuse to let his diagnosis define him and it definitely won’t stop him.

“We, along with his therapist will continue to push him. We believe he can, therefore he will, do it all.”

Ms Smith said the family was grateful to everyone who had helped.

She added: “In no way can we ever really express our gratitude.

“Your contributions are appreciated.”

Spastic quadriplegia CP was diagnosed earlier this year.

Ms Smith suspected something was wrong when Ehsan’s development did not progress at the rate expected for his age.

Ehsan, who weighed only 3lbs 15oz at birth, also had diagnosed intrauterine growth restriction, where a child does not grow at the normal rate in the womb, and an underactive thyroid gland.
