St. David reach final
David's beat Forties by four wickets at Nationals on Sunday to reach the final of the Commercial Cricket League's League Cup.
Pitcher, given a life in the 40s, also struck seven fours as St. David's overhauled Forties' 214 for eight with 22 balls to spare to set up a meeting with West Indian Association in the final on August 28.
Pitcher, batting at number six, was in irresistible form after coming in at 93 for four in the 20th over, clouting his first ball for six and ending the game with another legside six to finish with 112 not out.
Pitcher, a former Cup Match player, so dominated an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 74 from 49 balls with Keith Richardson that Richardson failed to get off the mark.
The turning point of game came in the 30th over with St. David's 141 for six -- and needing to score at around seven runs an over -- when Pitcher mishit Harold Minors' first ball towards long on where skipper Gordon Campbell, normally Forties' safest fielder, spilled a straightforward catch.
It was the only blemish in 48-year-old Pitcher's powerful innings and he added insult to injury by taking 18 in an over when Campbell returned to the attack.
Despite losing an early wicket, Elliott Pitcher and Dale Lamb put St. David's in a useful position by adding 49 for the second wicket before Paul Field (one for 14) won the battle of the veterans by bowling Pitcher for 20.
Granville Bennett, in his first season with Forties, struck twice with his offbreaks, ending Lamb's polished innings of 46 (five fours) at St. David's slipped to 100 for five.
Gary Edwards, the seventh bowler used, conceded only five runs in a tight five-over spell in which he bowled skipper Alan Lamb for seven. Then Pitcher took over to the delight of the happy group of St. David's supporters.
Earlier Campbell hit four fours in topscoring with 47 for Forties, adding 66 for the third wicket with Bennett (26), one of slow bowler Elliott Pitcher's two victims. Campbell fell to left-arm medium pacer Robin Minors who took two for 24.
Harold Minors hammered 31, including three big sixes in an over from Alan Lamb, and Ivan Clifford also chipped in with 30 as Forties passed 200 for the second week running.
Meanwhile, the second half of the league programme gets under way on Sunday.
