Big-hitter bladee steers safeguard safely
Michael in a rescheduled Commercial Cricket League fixture on Sunday when the other teams had the day off.
Both teams played short -- Safeguard with nine men and St Michael with eight -- in a low-scoring match at Warwick Secondary which was dominated by two West Indian-born players.
Former Cup Match star Colin Blades, fresh from his radio commentary duties at the drawn two-day classic at Wellington Oval, carried Safeguard to a two-wicket victory with an unbeaten knock of 45 which contained two sixes and five fours after St Michael had been dismissed for 96.
Medium pacer Rowan Bicarrie, getting plenty of lift, rocked Safeguard by taking all six wickets to fall. Bicarrie's final figures of six for for 48 were spoiled when he conceded 15 runs in his ninth and final over.
Safeguard were far from secure at 66 for six but an unbeaten seventh-wicket stand of 33 between Blades and Frankie Bento (three not out) sealed victory.
Safeguard and St Michael will meet again this weekend in the final round of scheduled league matches, although both are out of the title race.
The three title contenders -- Forties, North Village and West Indian Association -- are all away. Leaders Forties, five points ahead of North Village, meet Sandys Sports Club, Village take on Devonshire Stars and West Indian Association travel to PHC.
Village, bidding for their first league title in their second Commercial season, still have an outstanding fixture against Safeguard Security to slot in while West Indian Association have claimed the points from their unplayed match against St Michael two weeks ago.
WIA's claim will be among a number of issues to be dealt with at a league executive committee meeting which has been called for 5.30 p.m. on Friday at the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation.
Team captains, or club representatives, are also asked to attend the meeting at which the draw for the first round of the knockout starting on August 16 will be made.
