Somerset Extros and BAA Wanderers each earned favourable results as they began their defence of the Commercial League Cups.

Extros, Group B champions last year, avenged a loss at the hands of Exiles the previous week and defeated the visitors 2-0 on second-half strikes by Arthur Tucker and Radell Tankard.

Reigning Group A champs BAA had a much tougher time against a determined Forties outfit, with only a Frankie Brewster penalty separating the two, making the scoreline 1-0.

Meanwhile Spinning Wheel pulled somewhat of an upset in a free-scoring affair with Island Rangers.

Rangers led 2-1 at the half but their wily opponents stormed back to snatch a 3-2 win. Winston Burrows and Keith Bremar tallied for Rangers while Keith Bell (two) and a Glen Simmons penalty sealed it for Wheel.

The day's other match saw Prison Officers outlast Coca-Cola 2-1 at Somerset Cricket Club. Mike Lambe was among the Officers' scorers while Millard Rawlins netted for Coke.

SNOOKER SNO Whitewashes abounded during inter-divisional play last week in local snooker action.

Several First Division teams showed little mercy for their lowly opponents, ruthlessly dismissing any hopes each may have had of springing an upset.

In one such dismantling, Nationals hung on to a share of the First Division lead as breaks of 29 and 20 by First Division Player of the Week Paul Charleton spurred them on to a 5-0 thrashing of Queens II. Further wins by John Ray, Tony DeSilva, Tyler Moniz and Stephen Pantry completed the rout.

Meanwhile, co-leaders Old Colony Club kept pace with a similarly emphatic 5-0 result against Warwick II. Both Terry Southern and Phil Lambert scored over 80 points for the victors in their games while Robert Gaglio, Brian Haxton and Dave McLean also contributed.

One Second Division side did manage to spring an upset with Spanish Point turning the tables on Police.

Wayne Soares was named Second Division Player of the Week for his part in the 3-2 triumph. Also winning for Point were Stanley Wright and Kenny Wheatley, Sr.

The remaining matches saw Warwick I down Old Colony Club III 5-0 and Queens I and Sandys Sports Club defeat St. George's and Old Colony Club II by similar 5-0 margins.

The folowing is the draw for the first round of the Gosling Cup Knockout tournament on December 16: Spanish Point v St. George's D≻ Nationals v Queens Club I; Old Colony Club II v Warwick II; Old Colony Club III v Old Colony Club I.

TABLE TENNIS PP The most exciting week of the season gets under way tonight when champions Hamilton Parish travel to take on BAA.

BAA have in their team Bermuda number one Nick Frost and veteran Dave Waltham and after losing their opener to Eastern Stars in October, they need to come away with a win.

Parish, like Stars, are unbeaten but one will definitely lose that tag by Thursday as the two crash at the Crawl Hill club.

Tonight's other matches see Stars hosting St. George's Community Centre, Cleveland taking on Prison Officers, Southampton Princess facing West Indian Association, BPSA Simbas meeting Wolves and Social Club at home to Bermuda College.
