Geraghty undermines village
remarkable 92-run victory over North Village in the Commercial Cricket League's knockout final in a game of wildly fluctuating fortunes at Police field on Sunday.
Man-of-the-match Geraghty, a right-hand batsman and left-arm medium-pace bowler who had been a doubtful starter after taking a heavy knock in a midweek soccer match, first rescued Forties with a gutsy unbeaten 48 after they had slumped to 54 for six and then shattered Village with four for seven from eight overs.
Chasing Forties' 163 for nine, Village slid from 25 without loss to 71 all out with more than 12 overs to spare on a blameless batting strip. As in the second league match between the two sides North Village suffered from self-inflicted wounds, contributing to their own downfall with three run-outs.
The Simons family -- father Gerald and sons Gerald, Jr. and Rohaan -- had a hand in five Village dismissals with Gerald taking two catches and Rohaan one.
Gerald, Sr. ran out Frank Morgan from the covers and the sons joined forces to run out Elliott Jennings.
It was Forties' eighth knockout triumph in as many final appearances in 10 seasons.
The defeat was a bitter blow for strongly fancied Village -- and their large band of supporters -- but even so it has been a highly successful second Commercial season for the pro-soccer club who shared the league championship with Forties.
While Village were at full strength Forties were without their regular skipper Gordon Campbell as well as wicket-keeper/batsman Dave Woodhead who was sidelined with an attack of bursitis.
Former top amateur boxer Donville Yarde, who finished with four for 15 from eight overs, had Forties on the ropes at seven for two by snapping up skipper Gary Edwards and James Thomas in his opening over after Forties had won the toss and elected to bat.
Allan Lee (19) cracked three fours in one Jennings over and added 34 with Grant Tomkins but both fell with the total 41.
El James chipped in with two wickets to add to Yarde's four and Forties were reeling at 54 for six in only the 13th over but Geraghty, a 27-year-old Policeman, arrested the Village charge and featured in two crucial partnerships.
Geraghty and Clevie Smith (25) added 55 for the eighth wicket -- the best partnership of the match -- and 30 for the ninth wicket with Rohaan Simons who was bowled for 13 off the final ball.
David Scraders and Mike Levon got Village off to a flying start with 23 runs from the first three overs but Levon perished in the fourth over trying to hit over the top and in the fifth Geraghty swung the game Forties' way.
He bowled Scraders off his pads with his first ball and with the fifth claimed the prize scalp of El James, caught behind for a duck pushing defensively forward.
The run-outs of Jennings and Elliott Pitcher reduced Village to 39 for five and Forties pressed home their advantage. As wickets tumbled around him Cal Dill hit out to good effect, making top score of 23 before he was last out, brilliantly caught low down by Gerald Simons, Jr. swooping in at deep square leg.
