The anticipated battle between the second and third-placed teams did not materialise as Tools and Equipment could only manage to field three players and lost 23-7 to Tomp's Towing Service. They did manage to keep two of the games close with Dean Lightbourne rolling a third high game of 231.

Signature Card rolled to an easy 21-9 win over Gosling's. It took a good team effort for the win as Mike Lambe's pair of 226 games and second high series of 634 was the only bright spot in their effort. On their way, Signature Card rolled the night's second high team game of 978 and third high team series of 2,768.

The closest match ended in a 15-15 draw between Navy All-Stars and New Mix Ups. Pro Quinton Hayward's high individual game of 245 and third high series of 618 led NAS.

The night's high scoring match was between Marlboro and Stevedoring Services with league champions Marlboro taking a hard-fought 181 -111 victory. Their high team game and series, 1,007 and 2,864 respectively, was too much while Stevedoring posted the third high game and second high series of 2,799.

Richard Zuill rolled the night's top series with his 662 supported by Doug Hines' 605. The final match had a short-handed Franklin Travel team defeat Spoilers.

The prize presentation will be held next Thursday for both the Miller League and the men's championships. This will be preceeded by a scratch `sweeper tournament', which is open to anyone, male and female.

Bermuda Glass are the Mixed Classic League champions after beating Perfect Combination this week.

With one week left to play, they are safe at the top on 3861 points -- 42 points ahead of their nearest challengers Pro-Staff. Gorham's are a further three points back in third.

Glass clinched it on Tuesday when they downed Combination 12-8. They also claimed high team series honours with 2,224.

However, Combination were no pushover, putting up a good fight which produced the high team game of 770 and second high series 2,191 behind their opponents.

Winnette Lottimore rolled women's high series 583 for the losers.

Former champs Pro-Staff downed East End Asphalt 13-7 -- a victory which kept them in second place ahead of Gorham's, who slammed Four Star Pizza 15-5.

Pizza's Stephen Paul rolled men's high game 237 in a losing effort.

Terrible Four defeated Us Until 12-8, but it was not enough to lift them off the bottom of the table.

In the remaining game, Flagler Street Gang edged by Get Togethers 11-9, with Allan McIntosh rolling men's series 598 for the winners and Prudence Spriggs rolling women's high game 212 for the losers.

A meeting will be held next Tuesday night at 7.30 to go over league rules for the 1992-93 season.

GOLF GLF Bermuda's Shirley Wildi and her Floridian team-mate Reggie Hawes lead the way after the first day's play in the Eighth Annual Ladies' Invitation Tournament at Mid Ocean.

The pair shot a 71 (net 66) yesterday to put them at the top of the net leader board in the competition for the coveted Arton Trophy.

Theirs was the best round of the day, and it gave them a share of the lead with Bermuda's Bea Williams and her South Carolina playing partner Brenda Helmer.

Williams and Helmer, shot a 78 (net 66), putting them -- together with Wildi and Hawes - two strokes ahead of the chasing pack.

Behind them on 68 are the US pairing of Faith Riggs and Judy Hoff; Bermuda's Jean Mylrea and Ginette Spinucci of Georgia; Bermuda's Patsy McLauglin and Canadian Heather Colhoun; Zita Legere and Patricia Sheehan of the US; Bermuda's Macil Keefe and Virginia Coutts of Florida; Bermuda's Judy Kitson and Maisie Barlow of Pennsylvania; and Lady Langley and her Canadian partner June Eyton.

Bermuda's Madeline Joell and her team-mate Robyn Roberson of Georgia shot the second best round of the day yesterday -- a 73.

SOCCER SOC The winners of the drawn match between North Village's Alliance Division team and the Commercial Division Rams will be decided by penalty kicks on Sunday.

The final, against North Village Juniors, will then be played at 3 p.m. All teams are asked to be at Bernard Park by 2 p.m.

CRICKET CRI The Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association will hold a meeting tomorrow at the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation (7 p.m.). All umpires are asked to attend.

TRIATHLON TRI The Bermuda Triathlon Association is staging timed swims on Saturdays starting at 4 p.m. Participants will swim over either a half-mile or a mile with the course to start at the Harrington Sound dock to Devil's Hole and back.

The association is requesting that watercraft operators use caution during the swims.
