MOTOCROSS SCR The 1993-94 Pepsi motocross season ended as it began on Sunday -- with lots of action and close competition.
With the championships already settled it was the last time for some riders to take the spotlight.
The Pee Wee 50 and 80cc once again proved popular with the crowds and in 1994-95 they will become a part of the regular national series.
Newly-crowned 80cc champion Kemo Simons did not ease up and raced to first overall for the day with two firsts and a second, Jamel Hassell, who denied Simons another clean sweep, did not even place in the top three for the day as this was his only top three finish in a moto.
Jason DeSilva was second overall with a fourth, second and third while Russell Burchall rode consistently for two thirds and a fourth. Hassell and Craig Panchaud, who was second in the second moto, completed the top five.
The Maxwell brothers dominated the top two positions in the 125 C class, with Chris ending the day in first place with two wins and a second while Leroy had a first and two seconds. Stephan Lightbourne and Michael Burgess were third and fourth.
The tio of Aaron Pace, Robbie Smith and Buddy Joell went head to head trying to get a jump on each other in the 15-lap motos for the 125 B class, the most popular of the classes.
Pace was only able to get wins in the first two motos, before settling for third in the final race of the day. Even so it was enough to give him first overall on the last day of the season, while Smith was second with a third, second and first.
Joell, who twice came close to winning, had to settle for two seconds and a third, while Duprey Joell, Devon Moss and the now-retired Ras Mykkal were the other finishers.
Donnie Moss had an easy time riding solo for 250 C points.
SAILING SLG Travis Burland dominated the Optimist Dinghy racing in Mangrove Bay on Saturday when six races were held in light and shifting northerly breezes.
Burland was in a no-nonsense mood, winning the first three races comfortably.
The only blemish for Burland came when he was fourth in the fourth race, a minor setback as he rebounded to place second and first in the final two races of the day.
Burland now leads the series for the Oxford Cup with a total of five points, well ahead of a tight competition for second place between Andrew Henderson, Bobby Beale and William Thompson.
Henderson, who has 12 points, has sole possession of second after a string of second and third place finishes. Both Beale and Thompson had a day of mixed fortunes and are in a tie for third place with 123 points with each having a record of one win, one second, two thirds, one fourth and a fifth.
Jason Simons (24 points) and Lorenzo Lambert (28 points) struggled to find good boat speed in variable wind conditions and usually found themselves in fifth and sixth place.
Racing for the Oxford Cup continues in Mangrove Bay on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.
