AICO on Saturday ensured that their trophy cabinet would not stand bare during the off-season when they upset 7-Up Netts 31-24 to capture the Bermuda Netball
The newly-crowned League and Overall Knock-out champions were simply no match for a rejuvenated AICO bunch who gained sweet revenge against a team that had already beaten them twice during the regular season.
However, things appeared much different at the beginning of the contest as 7-Up Netts surged to an early four-goal lead.
AICO, though, remained composed and were able to claw their way back and eventually take a 16-10 lead into the interval.
As the second half progressed it was AICO pressing the advantage as 7-Up Netts found goal shooter Debbie DeShields and goal attack Vernelle Flood in splendid form around the net while goalkeeper Liz Cadell and goal defence Patti Jean Tucker made shooting a definite chore for their opponents.
DeShields poured in 23 points to pace the attack with Flood adding eight of her own.
"I thought we had an excellent game, played well and deserved to win,'' said AICO coach June Dill. "Our shooters were shooting the way they're capable of.'' Saturday's loss also ended any dreams of a perfect season with 7-Up Netts having been undefeated up until that point.
Earlier saw AICO gain entrance to the semifinals when Warwick failed to show for their first round clash. They followed this with as 39-14 pounding of Hamilton Parish.
7-Up Netts, meanwhile, were default winners over North Village and 31-18 victors over semifinal opponent PCC.
Faring better were 7-Up Netts Sunday League side, which captured their version of the League Knock-out through a 33-7 mauling of Boulevard keyed by a superb second half display where Boulevard failed to score a single goal.
Boulevard were surprise finalists, utilising a 17-14 upset win over Olympic Panthers to earn their way through.
7-Up Netts meanwhile got past Cooper and Lines (36-15) and sister team Netts (36-4).
SOFTBALL SOF The past weekend saw both Snowballs and Sandys Sports Club advance to the finals of their respective divisions through hard-earned victories at Bernard Park.
Snowballs defeated Team Xerox 7-5, but were forced to come from behind after solo homers from Shawn Simms and Cliff Ridley staked Team Xerox to an early 5-0 lead.
The fourth inning had Snowballs send five members across the plate to draw level and the comeback was complete when Braxton Stowe smashed a solo shot in the fifth and Brett Davison produced a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Cock and Feather stand as Snowballs' opponent in the Division A final.
Meanwhile, PTB saw their visions of Division C grandeur disappear when they squandered an 8-0 first inning lead to fall 10-9 against Sandys Sports Club.
Paying scant attention to the early setback, Sandys continually chipped away at PTB's lead with one run in the third and fourth innings, five in the fifth and one in the sixth to level things.
Cliff Payne doubled in a run in the top of the seventh to once again place PTB on top, but this was short lived as the bottom of the inning saw Timmy Simons' sacrifice fly set the scene for a game winning RBI single by Gina Sousa.
Sandys' next opponent will be Kempe & Whittle.
Social Club Jets will hold a meeting this evening at 8 p.m. at the club in preparation of the new season. Any new players are urged to attend.
GOLF GLF A pair of first class rounds by top male amateur Scott Mayne and leading woman Pat Morgan highlighted Saturday's Bermuda Golf Association monthly Medal at Ocean View Golf Course.
Mayne displayed his class with a superb six-under-par round, registering a 64 to outstrip his nearest challenger by a whopping seven strokes.
Henry Ascento was second among the men at 71, while Malcolm Burgess and Noel van Putten tied for third on 73.
Meanwhile, Morgan was in equally vintage form as her three-under-par 71 gave her a healthy 16-shot advantage over a trio of women, including Glenda Todd, Cindy Semos and Donnette Caisey.
SOCCER SOC Social Club ended their season in winning style on Sunday as they thrashed Hamilton Parish 4-1.
George Liburd registered a hat-trick for the Bluebirds who proved too powerful for Parish despite playing with just eight men. Chris Caisey scored for the losers.
