McKey receives top honour

Read all about it: Bermudian Andrea McKey has been feature in a martial arts book

A Bermudian martial artist has been inducted into the Adaptive Martial Arts Association’s Who’s Who Legends Hall of Fame.

Andrea McKey has also been featured in the Martial Arts Masters & Pioneers Autobiography Book and attended its release at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Centre in Washington, DC, last weekend.

The book, which is published each year, features 250 martial artists who are considered to be legends in the sport. Previous Bermudian entries are Skipper Ingham and Kent Bean.

McKey, who has trained in Shotokan — a style of karate — for 18 years, had to be nominated to be included in the publication.

“I’ve been competing in Shotokan for the past ten years and in overseas tournaments for the past five or six years,” said McKey, who trains at the Tabata-Ha Shotokan Karate-Do at the Holy Trinity Church in Hamilton Parish.

The 51-year-old also competed in the US Capitol Classic Martial Arts Tournament in Washington last weekend. She placed first in Creative Weapons, second in Traditional Forms and fourth in Traditional Weapons.

Among the guests attending the banquet were Art Camacho, an award winning director and fight choreographer, as well as film star Cynthia Rothrock and Dan Severn, a UFC Hall of Famer.

Jessie Bowen, the director of the American Martial Arts Alliance, said: “The AMAA Martial arts Mastered & Pioneers is a dream book for any martial artist wanting to learn the history and culture of the martial arts in America.”
