Chemical spill at hospital

A chemical spill at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital led to the evacuation of the visitor parking lot.Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda, was spilled on Thursday night.A Bermuda Hospitals Board spokesperson said: “Because this was a potentially dangerous incident, a safety line was in place that required the evacuation of the visitors' parking lot.”Sodium hydroxide is a chemical base used in industrial cleaning and many kinds of manufacturing. It is corrosive and can cause burns if it comes into contact with skin.The spill was contained by hospital, Works and Engineering and fire service workers. Hospital operations were not interrupted and there were no injuries reported.
