Stephen Allen chalked up his third Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10K road race victory in commanding style.

He was never headed after taking control of the race after two miles and although his finishing time of 34min 14sec was slower than his 2012 and 2013 winning marks, he was just as pleased with the result.

In the women’s race Deon Breary successfully defended her title in 41:57.

There were 307 finishers in the race, and two up-and-coming teenagers almost stole the show. Tyler Smith, 16, and Ryan Outerbridge, 12, took overall second and fourth place, respectively.

The race started outside the Lindo’s store in Warwick, and Allen and Smith were the early leaders, running side-by-side along Middle Road for the first two-and-a-half miles until they were on South Road and near the junction with Point Finger Road.

It was at this point that Allen broke clear of his younger rival, and once ahead he stretched his lead along South Road and up the testing Collector’s Hill and Chaingate Hill in the final two miles before reaching the finish at the Lindo’s store in Devonshire.

Afterwards he said: “It wasn’t the fastest time I’ve done on the course, but considering all the factors I’m pleased with it. The two or three hills are always hard.”

The race is one of his favourites on the Island. Allen plans to compete in an April race before focusing on the Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby in May.

Second-placed Smith was equally pleased with his performance.

“I was able to stay with him [Allen] for the first four kilometres, then he pulled away. I realised I had to settle into my own pace,” he said.

However, in the final mile he found himself in a duel with Ryan Wilson, who moved ahead as the pair raced towards Chaingate Hill. Going up the final hill Smith regained the advantage and held on to second place in time of 35:55, with Wilson close behind in 36:02.

Smith was about 30 seconds outside his personal best, but was happy with the time considering the testing course. He is gearing up for next weekend’s Junior North America Triathlon Championships in Florida. He said he had improved his cycling this season and also feels stronger as a swimmer and runner.

The teenager gained extra motivation from watching the televised exploits of fellow Bermudian triathlete Flora Duffy as she took third place in the ITU World Cup Series event in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. He said: “To see a Bermudian at that level in front of 60,000 people. It was inspiring.”

In fourth place was another youngster to look out for in the future. Ryan Outerbridge, of Clearwater Middle School, ran a commendable 39:11.

First woman home, Breary, went out fast and stayed ahead of the rest to secure her second consecutive Lindo’s crown. She was 13th overall. Following her across the finish line, and improving on her third place of last year, was Krista Dyer, in 42:44.

Third woman was former sprinter Gayle Lindsay, who finished strong on the hills to break clear of fourth-placed Vivienne Lochhead. Lindsay was 21st overall in 44:15, with Lochhead fourth woman and 25th overall in 44:45.

In the competitive four-mile competitive walk, Sinclair Smith was first in 41:04, ahead of Gary Young in 41:36 and Shinah Simons in 42:05. First woman was Sheena Young in 42:26, ahead of Gilda Can in 44:09 and Gina Bradshaw in 44:13. There were 75 finishers in the competitive walk and hundreds more in the non-competitive charity walk.

The Lindo’s to Lindo’s road race and walk raised funds for the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
