LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Cut the Civil ServiceJanuary 2, 2010Dear Sir,While I am a big supporter of the workers and unions, especially in the City of Hamilton, I am concerned with the over-expansion of the Bermuda national civil service; it's way too large and spiraling out of control as to its published and hidden costs.Mr Editor, we need and updated legislation to regulate and control the Civil Servants. I think the Premier needs to launch an independent study!Anyone paid or employed by the Government should not be allowed a second job or run their own business at the same time. Too many times the civil servants spend personal time on their own affairs which conflict with their public duty of working overtime to help the public; especially in these difficult times.Mr Editor, I am also concerned with the Government employees and what they do for their relatives and friends. Any retired Civil Servant should not be able to have associations with any government contracts or work for at least five years after they leave public service. Any relative that has ties to the Government should be publicly disclosed.Too much senior civil servant time is wasted in figuring out policy for this country when all they need to do is to follow the instructions of their political masters their Cabinet Ministers!Let's save the country serious money Mr Editor by reducing the amount of people employed for Government by 50 percent!CHARLES SPANSWICKCity of Hamilton
