Eagles get clear of relegation dog fight

Devonshire Colts 0Somerset Eagles 2Somerset Eagles lifted themselves six-points clear of bottom club Devonshire Cougars after beating them at Police Field yesterday courtesy of goals from Shakir Smith and Kyle Williams. With both sides languishing in the relegation zone, it was the visitors who won the ‘six pointer’ and moved themselves out of the bottom two, while also having a game in hand.Smith scored in the 37th minute, while Williams got his name on the sheet in the 81st.“It was important to come here and get the result that would get us out of the bottom two,” said Smith. “We have had a few bad games recently and we knew this one was a must win and it is good to know we got the job done.”In a match that was had little excitement in either goal area with the conditions proving a real nuisance, it was Smith who seemed to be a cut above the rest early on, forcing a fine save out of Colts goalkeeper Greg Rose in the 23rd minute. It would be a sign of things to come, as it was Smith who opened the scoring after being put in by a long ball over the top from Marcus Johnson, with the pacy striker having the simple task of slotting his effort home.Colts did cause Eagles a few problems on set pieces, with the height of Bayon Robinson winning aerial challenges, but no one on his team seemed to be interested in pulling the side level. The hosts were made to pay for their laid back approach to game, when Rose spilled a Smith free kick into the path of Williams who had the simple task of tapping home from two yards. It was a deserved result for Eagles, who were missing a host of players who are on international duty in Suriname with Bermuda Under-20s.“Obviously missing Troy and a few of the other guys who are with the national team is a loss, especially because he is our engine, he is our distributor, but we held it together well today, listened to the coach’s advice and got through it,” said Smith.“We had to stick in and fight hard because sometimes we like to sit back and let the game be played out, but we didn’t allow ourselves to be pressured into situations today and we are pleased with the result.”Devonshire Colts: G Rose, C Durham, B Robinson, T Foote, J Washington (K Wade, 65), J Khan, C Trott (R Tyrell,55) M Burch, L Symonds, Z Wilson (M Pace, 85), K Jones.
