Green Lantern staff head to court over missing severance pay
Green Lantern staff have taken legal action against the owners of the now-closed restaurant over more than $60,000 in severance pay they claim they’re owed.The seven staff all lost their jobs when the landmark diner shut down in February, a victim of the Island’s recession.The building was put up for sale for $1.9 million in March but the asking price has since dropped by a substantial $500,000 to $1.4 million.Lawyer Craig Rothwell of Cox Hallett Wilkinson, who is representing the seven staff, said yesterday they were not give the redundancy pay they were entitled to when the restaurant closed. He said the owners since signed “a compromise agreement” on severance pay.He said around $4,000 of some $63,000 agreed on had been paid to staff, with the owners saying they needed to wait for the property to be sold in order to pay the rest.However, Mr Rothwell said, “Some of my clients are in a difficult financial position. Some have not been able to find work since.”He said the staff want their money as soon as possible.Thus the writ was filed against Janice Swan, trading as Green Lantern, by the following staff members: Linda Bailey, Glenmore Barrett, Tacita Butterfield, Lois Easton, Tanya Hill, Wenceles Lauzer and Laverne Scott.Family-owned and operated restaurant Green Lantern closed its doors in February after 70 years in business.Andre Woods owns the Serpentine Road property along with his mother, Janice. In total, the restaurant encompasses 2,241 square feet of space and sits on .212 acres of land.Mr Woods said yesterday he had “no comment” on the writ.He told The Royal Gazette earlier this year when the restaurant closed that “12 or 13” people would lose jobs.“It’s because of the economic climate,” he had said. “Business had been declining since last year.”Listed with Bermuda Realty, the property is described as “a well-established restaurant, perfectly located on Serpentine Road”.The realtor says the restaurant consists of a large entrance counter, two kitchens, spacious dining area complete with tables and chairs, small dining area, presently occupied by drink coolers and freezers, two half bath and storage room.Three additional storage rooms and large freeze room located in basement, plus a large parking area on western side of restaurant for patrons only.
