It’s a truck load of fun, and it is proving to be popular across the island for children’s birthday parties, treats, and corporate and community events.

The GameEFX game truck has a limousine-style interior fitted with video-gaming units, five flatscreen high-definition TVs, surround sound, laser lighting and bench seating. It also has climate control and its own built-in power supply.

There are three TV screens inside the vehicle, together with bench seating, while a further two gaming screens can be used on the outside of the truck, which means that up to 20 people can be playing a game simultaneously, and more when a rota system is used.

It can be hired out for parties and other events, providing a few hours of entertainment and competition for all ages.

Shawnette McLarty was looking for a way to introduce a gaming-style venture to the island, because she felt there were few options for children. At first she considered creating a central location, but when that proved unfeasible she did further research online.

“I discovered it was popular in the US to have gaming trailer trucks. Those would be too big for Bermuda, but I wondered if we could modify something that would work in Bermuda,” she said.

The answer was yes, and a compact truck equipped with a mobile video game theatre was brought to the island last June.

Because it is a smaller-sized truck it can reach just about any property on the island. And even if there is not enough room for it, arrangements can be made to host a party event at a nearby park, car park or open space.

Mrs McLarty has assistance from her husband, Patrick, her son and other family members, so there is always someone on hand to act as a gaming coach to offer instructions and advice, if needed, for game players.

The GameEFX truck has a library of more than 30 games, and new titles are regularly added. The game consoles are Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.

“We are always looking at what games are popular. We keep to multiplayer games, for two to four players and we update the library,” Mrs McLarty said.

The game truck has been used at a number of children’s parties, some community events and at a few schools. But it’s not just for children, adults and corporations can also hire out the mobile party entertainment to play the games with friends — and they do.

In terms of popularity, the game that gets the most action is Fifa .

“It is very popular with the boys, but I’ve also seen the girls playing it,” said Mrs McLarty.

Just Dance is a favourite for the girls, and other games that get a lot of play are Overcooked, which involved feeding demanding customers, Call of Duty, and Mario Kart.

Mrs McLarty is pleased with the response to the game truck. She said: “It has been very well received.”
