Sam Butler (KPMG) pulled off a big upset as he recorded a straight sets victory over Bermuda’s number one player Gavin Manders (Aspen) in the men’s open singles at WER Joell Tennis Centre.Butler, who plays football for Premier Division Flanagan’s Onions, won the gold medal after upstaging Manders 6-3, 6-2.Butler then teamed up with Zina Hayward (KPMG) to win the gold medal in the mixed doubles, defeating Olivia Fraser-Smith (AOS) and James Morgan (Partner Re) 8-0 in the final.Claiming the gold medal in the ladies’ open singles was Jinky Irada (Deloitte) who breezed past Surlena Smith (Colonial) 6-1, 6-0 in the final.Hayward won the gold medal in the ladies over-40 singles after seeing off Chris Elliott (XL) 7-5, 6-3 in the final.Jason Titterton (Renaisance Re) won the gold medal in the men’s 30-39 singles as he got past Vadim Reingevurts (Renaissance Re) 6-4, 6-2 in the final.Damien Smith (Hiscox) captured the gold medal in the men’s 40-49 singles after prevailing over Tony Siddle (Butterfield & Vallis) 6-2, retired, at the last hurdle.Claiming the gold medal in the men’s 50-plus singles was Andrew Kennedy (Argus) who beat Wilfred Gonsalves (BF&M) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a close final.Gaia Stemphlet (Marsh & Mclennan) was the sole competitor in the ladies’ 30-39 singles division.Nicholas Thuell (Hiscox) and Smith won gold in the men’s doubles, beating Manders and Frick 8-5.Gary Weller (AWG) and Kennedy won the gold medal in the men’s over-40 doubles via a lopsided 8-0 win over Jason Floyd (XL) and Marc Quig (ATB) in the final.The ladies’ doubles gold medal went to Elizabeth Stout (Appleby) and Allison Forte (Appleby) who prevailed against Gaylynne Cannonier (AWF) and Michelle Jackson (Argus) 8-3 in the final.
