Daniel Matthews, his right hand bandaged, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to swearing in public, punching the windscreen of a private car and kicking a Police car around 1.30 p.m. on April 11.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis heard that Matthews, a construction worker, was watched by Police after they arrived to quell a disturbance outside his 15 Alexandra Road home.

Crown counsel Lesley Basden said Matthews approached officers with a hedge trimmer in his hands, but was stopped just three feet away by family members.

Matthews was warned about his behaviour several times. When officers moved to arrest him, Matthews shouted: "Take your f***ing hands off me!'' Ms Basden said there was a struggle during which Matthews was able to punch the windscreen of a car owned by Gary Rawlins, causing at least $500 damage.

Once under control, he was placed in a Police car but began to kick at the door until it was unable to close properly.

His lawyer Kevin Bean said Matthews was upset at an alleged assault on his younger brother and sister by another neighbour.

Mr. Bean said Mr. Rawlins' car was a random target and added: "Obviously the situation was most inflammatory. Mr. Matthews would like to apologise to the court and to the car owner.'' Mr. Francis fined Matthews $200 for using offensive words, and $600 for damaging Mr. Rawlins' car as compensation.

Matthews was also fined $600 for damaging the Police car. He must pay the $1,400 by June 30 or face 130 days in prison.

Garth John Hayward pleaded guilty before Senior Magistrate Will Francis yesterday to breaking and entering the Vernon Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church in Southampton on February 18.

Mr. Francis sentenced Hayward, 32, to 12 months in prison on each count, to be served concurrently with an 18-month sentence set on March 21.

Hayward, 32, admitted damaging a safe in the church in the nighttime and forging a $750 cheque in the name of the pastor, Howard Dill.

He also admitted breaking into the Bermuda Institute School between March 12 and 14 and stealing $150 and stereo equipment.

Crown counsel Lesley Basden said Hayward admitted the offences when officers met him at Westgate Correctional Facility after "receiving information'' about the circumstances surrounding the cashing of the cheque.

The court heard the church administrator returned to the church on the morning of February 18 to find a smashed window and damaged safe in the church.

Hayward stole $75 and a cheque belonging to Rev. Dill. The safe was valued at $450 and was ruined.

Ms Basden said the principal of Bermuda Institute went to the school on March 14 to discover several offices and classrooms had been entered, and several teachers' desks had been rifled through.

Hayward later admitted he entered the school through an unlocked window. He said he stole a VCR and portable stereo system to buy drugs and alcohol.

ADDICT WANTS TO TURN LIFE AROUND CTS Addict wants to turn life around A recovering addict will be sentenced next week for forging four cheques after he told a Magistrate he was tired of drug use and had sought help.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis remanded Kenneth Burns into custody to give him time to finalise entry into a drug treatment programme run by the New Testament Church of God.

An admitted heroin addict, Burns, 54, pleaded guilty yesterday to receiving a Bank of Butterfield credit card, knowing it was unlawfully obtained.

He also admitted forging receipts, uttering false cheques, and obtaining goods through false pretences, all related to four transactions.

Crown counsel Lesley Basden said Heather Stafford left her purse containing personal items in her car in a parking lot in Hamilton on March 20.

Mrs. Stafford reported the theft to Police and was contacted by the Bank of Butterfield on March 24 about several unauthorised transactions on her husband's card.

Burns got food and beverages from Dismont Robinson Ltd., and from two transactions from Dollar Savers.

He also got a pair of sneakers from the Sportseller which he was wearing when Police arrested him after an investigation.

The total value of the food, beverages, cigarettes, and sneakers was $652.52.

Burns, who is homeless, told Mr. Francis: "I've been locked up for six days.

In the interim I met a Policewoman and through her help and prayer I want to turn my life around.'' He added: "I have been visited by members of the New Testament Church of God through their Christian Ministry Home. I'm tired.'' Mr. Francis told Burns to get a letter from church officials about his entry into the drug treatment programme in preparation for his sentencing on April 21.

TEEN DENIES MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES CTS Teen denies multiple drug charges A 19-year-old Southampton man pleaded not guilty to multiple drug charges in Magistrates' Court.

Sergio Augustus, of Sunnyside Park, denied importing cannabis and possessing the drug with intent to supply on January 5.

He also denied charges of importing and possessing cannabis resin with intent to supply.

Lawyer Renee Foggo represented Augustus who was released on $2,000 bail with a like surety.

He will next appear for trial on September 20.

MAN IS FACING HEROIN CHARGES CTS Man is facing heroin charges A Pembroke man has appeared in Magistrates' Court to face charges of importing heroin with intent to supply last Friday.

Floyd McCoy Hayward did not have to enter a plea on the indictable charges of importing diamorphine into the Island and importing diamorphine with intent to supply on April 9.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis freed Hayward, 54, on $5,000 bail with a surety in a like amount. Hayward must also surrender his travel documents.

Hayward will return to Magistrates' Court for mention on May 11, but his case will be dealt with in the Supreme Court.
