Churchgoer's wallet stolen

A thief stole a wallet containing $300 in cash from a woman's handbag while she was worshiping at St. Paul's Church in Paget on Sunday.

A Police spokesman said the complainant thought the theft happened between 9.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. during the morning service.

The red leather wallet, which also contained credit cards and personal papers, was removed from her handbag.

And on Thursday a culprit broke into a Pembroke home and stole a brown wallet containing $1,500.

The complainant, from Two Ways Mews Lane, told Police officers that she thought the incident happened between noon and 2 p.m.

A thief also stole a Bank of Bermuda money bag containing $170 in cash from a home on St. John's Hill, Pembroke.

The complainants thought the incident happened between 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday and 1.30 p.m. on Thursday.

Inquires into the incidents are underway and anyone with information should call Police on 295-0011.

Tree collection dates

Old Christmas trees will be collected by the Department of Works at set times during the next ten days.

Collection for areas from Dockyard to Paget, will be on Wednesday, January 8, while collection of trees from Pembroke and Devonshire to St. George's will be on the following Wednesday, January 15.

The Ministry is asking residents not to place their trees in tree bags, and that they be free of tinsel, nails, decorations and any other ornamental items.

The trees must be placed out for collection by 7.30 a.m. on those days.

New passes required

Motorists who require access to Hamilton Docks no longer need permits for their vehicles. Instead, they must obtain personal dock passes from the Corporation of Hamilton which are renewable every five years.

As of April 1, those in possession of the old dock passes will be not be permitted on the docks.

"It's in our efforts to improve and streamline the process at the docks," said Corporation docks manager Ewart Lambert. "Where previously truck operators had a separate pass for their trucks, we are now combining the two."

Mr. Lambert said the move will make finding any contact information for the vehicle operators easier. Application forms for the new passes are available at the Corporation's City Hall offices or at the security huts at No. 7 and No. 8 gates, but will only be accepted at City Hall.

Paget blaze contained

Firefighters were called to Paget on New Year's Day to attend to a fire in a White Sands Road residence.

The fire, caused by a bed sheet blowing against a lit candle and igniting, was confined to the bedroom of the apartment. The mattress, box spring, sheets, carpet and night table were all damaged.

Fire personnel estimated the loss at $2,000.
