A neighbour of Basil Hassell described how the senior arrived at his door covered in blood after he was attacked during a break-in, a Supreme Court jury heard yesterday.

Stephen Dick, who rented an apartment in Cambridge Road, Sandys, next to where Mr. Hassell, 65, was living, gave a written statement to Police.

"Basil was in a mess, he was covered in blood. All his head, his face to the back of his head was covered in blood.

"He was all swollen up and vomiting blood," he said in his statement, which was read to the jury yesterday.

The attack took place during a burglary at the house, owned by Mr. Hassell's nephew Donald, around 6 a.m. on December 29, 2001.

Derrick Duval Binns, 34, of George's Bay Road, Sandys, denies burglary and wounding Mr. Hassell with intent to disfigure him.

Another man, Roddelle Lightbourne, has already pleaded guilty in reference to the incident, the jury heard on Monday.

Dr. Jonathan Murray, who treated Mr. Hassell, said the victim had two fractures of the jaw and there "would probably be permanent disfiguring".

Det. Con. Denise Downey told Crown counsel Vinette Graham-Allen how she and other officers arrested Binns at a house in Weathervane Lane, Sandys.

Under cross-examination from Binns' lawyer Craig Attridge, the officer said she did not make any notes in a notebook, but she later produced a diary of notes concerning the case.

The trial before Assistant Justice Charles-Etta Simmons continues today.
