Habitat for Humanity Bermuda is aiming to do its part to ease the Island?s housing shortage.

A public meeting featuring Millard Fuller, the founder and president of the Christian house-building organisation, will take place at Whitney Institute at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26.

?Through its church relations committee, Habitat for Humanity Bermuda is building an interfaith commitment to community relationships and hope for Bermudians struggling with an overcrowded and expensive housing environment,? said Michael Markham, of Habitat Bermuda.

?Habitat is a Christian organisation but works with all denominations, even those without religion.

?Mr. Fuller is known for his talks about ?the theology of the hammer? and Habitat volunteers don?t argue about differences in religion, they just get out there and work on fixing or building a house or apartment for a neighbour in need,? said Mr. Markham.

An individual commits to 250 hours of service that Habitat calls ?sweat equity?.

Habitat board members and community volunteers also help.

?We all roll up our sleeves and help in any way we can, painting, landscaping and mixing cement,? said Charles Hollis, deputy chairman of Habitat Bermuda.

Families, clubs or community support groups who want to assist in building a home for a family should attend the meeting.
