A man admitted to causing the death of his passenger because of dangerous driving his motorbike when he appeared in Supreme Court.

Cheherlo Douglas, 24, of St. George's, pleaded guilty to causing death of Alshe Allana Shanelle Caisey because of reckless or dangerous driving on August 17, 2003.

Douglas' lawyer, Elizabeth Christopher requested a Social Inquiry Report to be ordered before sentencing.

Puisne Justice Charles-Etta Simmons said a sentencing date will be set for Douglas at the next arraignment's session on October 1. Douglas was denied bail.

"The defendant has pleaded guilty to a very serious offence. On the facts of the case, he is remanded in custody until called for," Mrs. Justice Simmons said.

Fined for possession

A New Jersey man was fined $1,000 for bringing what he called "a small amount of bud" into Bermuda.

Kyle Thomas Kietrys, 39, of Califon, New Jersey pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to importing 2.57 grams of cannabis into the Island.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Kietrys arrived at the Bermuda International Airport from New Jersey, earlier this month.

When he entered the Customs hall, a drug-sniffing dog was attracted to Kietrys' "groin area". When a Customs Officer asked him if he had any drugs. Kietrys made no reply.

In the secondary searching room, Kietrys said he was carrying "a small amount of bud" and said that "bud was marijuana".

When searched, the cannabis was found inside an "off white putty substance" he had stuffed down the front of his trousers.

Magistrate Edward King told him: "This offence carries a maximum penalty of $10,000 or five years imprisonment, or both."

Kietrys pleaded for leniency and said the cannabis was for his personal use.

He had to pay his fine by the end of Tuesday, or face "120 days in prison", Mr. King said.

Apartment block planned

A private developer has submitted plans to construct a six unit apartment house with a swimming pool in Sandys.

Doris Foley has applied for permission to develop 33 Long Bay Lane into the new apartment complex. The existing building at the site will be demolished to make room for the development which also includes an office and maintenance building.

Ms Foley said the apartments will be built for rental purposes.
