Breaking News: Harmony Club to house overseas Police recruits

Housing minister Senator Burch at today press conference at the Harmony Club hotel about housing new police recruits on the hotel property.

Government has entered into an agreement to house overseas Police recruits at the former Harmony Club hotel in Paget.

The property closed two years ago and was operated by Bermuda Resort Hotels Ltd. Since that time, shareholders have been unable to find the investment needed to revive the hotel, which can house 40 people.

Today Minister of Housing Senator David Burch said Government had approached the principals of the property in 2007 about buying it before preliminary discussions were held.

He said: “In the majority of the cases, those recruited will be single professionals whose preference will be the rental of a studio or one bedroom apartment.”

Sen. Burch said recruitment of these type of professionals often pitted them against Bermudians who are seeking housing accommodation.

“Market conditions dictate that left in direct competition with Bermudians in this critical sector of the rental market, these professionals’ ability to guarantee payment make them preferable to landlords.”
