Nahki Wells inched closer to becoming the first Bermudian to play in the Premier League since Shaun Goater after he was an unused substitute in Burnley’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Turf Moor today.

Jeff Hendrick scored Burnley’s winner in the 74th minute, after getting onto the end of Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s a cross and firing home from close range.

Sean Dyche’s side moved up to seventh in the Premier League standings, level on points with sixth-placed Liverpool.

Wells may get another opportunity to make his club debut when the Clarets travel to Southampton on Saturday.

Speculation that Wells would be included in Dyche’s squad yesterday mounted after the striker did not feature for Burnley’s Under-23 squad in a 2-0 loss away to Crewe Alexandra at the weekend.

He made three appearances for Burnley Under-23s in the Professional Development League, including two against Sheffield United, before being drafted into the club’s first team.

The 27-year-old signed for Burnley for £5 million on transfer-deadline day from the club’s Premier rivals Huddersfield Town.

The former Dandy Town man was a key part in Huddersfield’s promotion from the English second tier last season, scoring penalties in shoot-out wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Reading in the play-offs. However, he fell down the pecking order at the John Smith’s Stadium after the arrival of Steve Mounié, their record signing, and Laurent Depoitre.

Wells’s dream of playing top flight was delayed after he had minor surgery to remove a screw in his ankle from an operation earlier in his career.
