Exciting new changes are under way for a mini-golf course located in Dockyard.

Since opening three years ago, Fun Golf has seen tremendous growth and is a favourite of both locals and overseas guests.

Now it is planning to build a new restaurant by March next year and is looking at the possibility of hosting an international, professional mini-golf tournament.

Hakan Lindgren, designer and owner of Fun Golf, is no novice when it comes to owning mini-golf courses.

He has built similar courses in Europe, including his home country Sweden.

“I had friends from Bermuda who visited me in Sweden. They talked me into building a mini-golf course here”, he declared. “I told them if they find the right location I will, so they found the place and I built one.”

Mr Lindgren is very happy with the success and growth of the course.

“Fun Golf is rated one of Bermuda’s most popular tourist attractions, which is shown on various sites including TripAdvisor,” he said.

Many people send e-mails from overseas to book in advance of their visits.

He wanted to create a very authentic Bermudian culture at Fun Golf that visitors can experience and locals can enjoy.

“I have decided that I will only hire Bermudian staff, as we have tourists who want an authentic Bermudian feel,” Mr Lindgren said.

“It would not make sense to hire anyone who is not Bermudian. The staff I have are great and know a lot about the island if tourists should have questions.”

Mr Lindgren decided to build a kitchen to add value for visitors.

“Many people would come here and ask if we serve food. It was always an idea of mine to have a kitchen but now it is more of a necessity,” he said.

The mini-golf course is starting the planning process for the kitchen and intend to have it ready for next March, with the aim of offering local, homemade food.

Wayne Augustus, manager of Fun Golf, said: “The main focus is creating the base for the family orientation and to give people insight on how we want this establishment to move forward.

“We are a destination up here in Dockyard, but we want people from all over the island to come. Hopefully things will be put in place soon, especially for public transport to get the traffic flowing through the gates.”

Mr Lindgren said he had interest in hosting an international mini-golf tournament at Fun Golf.

“Mini-golf has become famous for tournaments and has a world federation and a professional league,” he said. “People play the sport for a lot of money and we are looking forward to host an international event here.

“The mini-golfers that have visited the course rated it as one of the best places in the world for mini-golf and hopefully we can collaborate with a cruise line so golfers can enjoy a cruise and play for a few days as well. We are looking forward to this event.”
