Lister rejects idea of PLP cronyism

Bermuda Industrial Union with an expose of rent levels charged to Government departments by property companies with links with the last United Bermuda Party administration.

Development, Opportunity and Government Services Minister Terry Lister read out a list of property companies connected to UBP figures who rent office space to Government departments.

This was in response to shadow minister Allan Marshall , who said people may ask questions about the Progessive Labour Party Government moving the Government archives from St. George's to a BIU building, the former Co-Op in Hamilton.

Mr. Lister told the House of Assembly he did not know about the tendering process for the archives rental because it was carried out by Works and Engineering.

But he revealed a number of Government offices were leased to UBP-linked companies.

Gibbons Management Services and the Gibbons Company -- connected to Shadow Finance Minister Grant Gibbons -- leases office space to Government departments for rents of between $13.36 and $22 a square foot.

Health and Family Services leases the Melbourne House from Edgar Wilkinson, former UBP MP David Wilkinson and Sandra Outerbridge for $33.76 a square foot.

The Department of Human Affairs rents a suite from the same people for $32.63.

The Audit Department rents a floor at $27.75 in Hemisphere House from Raphael Ltd, owned by former UBP MP Ralph Marshall. Mr. Lister said the rental from the BIU was by far the lowest, at just $7.27 a square foot.

He told the House of Assembly: "I hope this will put to bed the idea that the PLP is taking care of its friends.''
