Answers demanded over uncollected trash

Trash bags at Devonshire Bay waiting to be collected

Both Opposition parties have demanded an answer from Government as uncollected trash continues to pile up.Residents from the East End, Warwick, Pembroke, Somerset and Devonshire have contacted The Royal Gazette to say waste was mounting, while Government remains silent on the condition of its malfunctioning garbage trucks. The Ministry of Public Works has not responded to requests for an update on the four trucks which last week were said to be out of action due to mechanical faults, although a spokesman said collection was authorised on Saturday to deal with the backlog. One resident in Devonshire Bay said bags had lain by the road for some days; another said there was uncollected trash in Astwood Cove on South Road, Warwick; another pointed to garbage in Mount Hill, Pembroke. The United Bermuda Party's Shadow Works Minister, Pat Gordon-Pamplin, said it was not an isolated incident and called on Government to “stop the rot”.“There have been enough instances over the past year that raise the question of whether this Government is paying attention to the nuts and bolts of its infrastructure operations.”She pointed to breakdowns with the fast ferries, as well as at the Tynes Bay incinerator which has resulted in “mountains of garbage being dumped at Morgan's Point, creating what some say is a major rat problem”.Bermuda Democratic Alliance candidate Dueane Dill said trash was also piling up in St George's.The BDA's Public Works spokesman said: “It is unfortunate that at this time of the year, post-holiday, when there is likely to be a greater degree of garbage, collection has been halted.“What's perplexing is that there has been no information regarding the reason and likely timing of rectification.“There has been some indication of mechanical difficulties but no indication of the magnitude of those difficulties. One must ask whether this is, as the situation with the ferries, the result of little or no maintenence planning.”Meanwhile, Works announced the Christmas tree collection dates have been put back to Wednesday next week in the East end, and the following Wednesday in the West end; they were initially due to be collected yesterday and next week.People are urged to remove all tinsel, lights, ornaments and tree bags from their trees, with a spokesman saying: “This assistance will keep our staff safe from flying metal objects, protect valuable shredding equipment and allow the production of higher quality finished compost.”The Ministry advised the Marsh Folly Composting Facility accepts horticultural materials from households and commercial entities, producing free compost for residents and businesses.* Are you affected?
