'Natural leader' Gilbert to skipper U19s

Capatin: Joshua Gibert

Joshua Gilbert will captain the Bermuda Under-19s when they travel to Florida next month to compete in the ICC Americas Under-19 tournament. The Somerset spinner is just one of several players in the squad who have already played at senior level, with Damali Bell, Kamau Leverock, Christian Burgess and Kevon Fubler also included. With the likes of UK-based Greg Maybury also in the team, head coach David Moore has named a strong squad who should be able to mix it with Canada and USA.Gilbert's selection as captain comes not only because of his experiences with the senior team, for whom he was a permanent fixture last summer, but also because he is, according to Moore, ‘a natural leader'.“The key for us with Joshua is that he's an experienced international cricketer,” said Moore. “He's been able to mix it with the senior players like (David) Hemp, (Stephen) Outerbridge, and (Irving) Romaine, and he clearly understands how to put game plans in to play because he's been able to bowl to those game plans when he's been playing for the senior team.“He's a mature young man and he's a quality person, and those are the sorts of things that we are looking for from our leaders. Joshua leads anyway, whether he's a leader or not.“He's a natural leader.”Bermuda Cricket Board named an initial squad of 17 players yesterday, and the final 14 who will compete in the tournament will be named by the end of the week. The tournament, which is also serving as the regional qualifiers for the under-19 World Cup Global Qualifier in July, runs from February 6-13 and will see Bermuda take on Argentina, Bahamas, Canada, USA and Cayman Islands.“It has been a very difficult process in paring the squad down to 17 and it will be even harder to get it down to 14,” said Moore.“All the players in the squad have worked very hard and have shown their commitment to training, improvement and representing Bermuda. The selected squad augurs well for the future of elite cricket in Bermuda with a good mix of experience and enthusiasm.“There are already a number of athletes that have played National team cricket, including Joshua Gilbert, Christian Burgess, Kevon Fubler, Damali Bell and Kamau Leverock. Their experience, mixed with the up and coming younger players, will be very important if this team is to be successful in the Americas qualifiers and beyond to the World Group Qualifiers.“As we are in a strong region I expect that most teams in this tournament will be very close in natural ability, but as with most under age tournaments, it will be those teams and players that work hard and make the correct decisions at important times that will get through to the next stage.”Under-19 squad: Joshua Gilbert (Captain), Kamau Leverock, William White, Kevon Fubler, Tre Manders, Greg Maybury, Damali Bell, Kamel Easton, Christian Burgess, Lateef Trott, Mackih McGowan, Jaloni Albouy, Shaquille Jones, Joshua Commissiong, Kwasi James, Sherwin Hall, Antonio Darrell.
