Senior forced to pay dearly for pension mix-up

An elderly woman has been told that she will have to go without a pension for the next five years because of a mix-up by the Hotel Pension Fund.

Gwendolyn Taylor?s cheques stopped arriving this month, according to her daughter Belinda Brown.

When she contacted the fund administrator she was told that she had been overpaid for her pension since 1999 and the excess funds would have to be paid back.

In a letter to the fund?s trustees, copied to, Ms Brown said that her mother had been receiving two cheques since April 2000.

She said that they enquired about the matter and were told that Ms Taylor was receiving two cheques because she had worked two jobs at Sonesta Hotel.

?How is it that five years later the Hotel Pension Department realises that my mother has been overpaid and then tell my mother that she will no longer receive Hotel Pension cheques because she has to pay money back to the Hotel Pension from 1999 to 2004,? Ms Brown wrote to the trustees.

?My mother shouldn?t have to pay for the Pension Department?s mistakes.

?And five years worth ? what happened to your monthly and yearly records?

?People haven?t been doing their job.?

She added that the mistake was made by more than just one person, but her mother was having to pay.

?My mother should be entitled to her monthly pension cheque. Again this is your error not my mother?s.?

Ms Brown also complained that her mother was only told that her cheques had come to an end when she called the pension?s office to ask about her cheque, and that the situation had affected her mother ?badly?.

She could not be contacted for further clarification, and Calvin White the plan administrator for the fund declined to comment.
