Parliament will today consider cosmetic changes to titles in the Legislature with a bill being brought by Attorney General Dame Lois Browne Evans.

The Legislature (Qualifications and Disqualifications) Amendment 2002 proposes to substitute the words parliamentary secretary for the words junior minister and is not expected to be contentious.

MPs will also debate pension benefits and contributions increases.

But the big debate will come with Opposition MP John Barritt's motion to remove the principle of double jeopardy from criminal proceedings.

Mr. Barritt is seeking the support of his Parliamentary colleagues to consider allowing retrials after acquittal when fresh and compelling evidence surfaces. Moves are afoot in Britain to overturn the centuries old prohibition against double jeopardy, and the Rebecca Middleton murder trial debacle has spurred similar considerations in Bermuda.
