Lambe scores again but Carlisle suffer loss
Reggie Lambe, the Carlisle United midfielder, scored his third goal in as many outings in Sky Bet League Two at the weekend.
However, it was not enough to prevent the Cumbrian side from suffering their biggest league loss this season after they went down 4-1 away to newly promoted Lincoln City at Sincil Bank on Saturday.
The Bermuda captain netted Carlisle’s consolation from a tight angle eight minutes after the visitors were reduced to ten men with the sending off of Tom Parkes.
The defender picked up a second yellow card after fouling forward Matt Green in the box. Matthew Rhead made no mistake from the spot to put Lincoln firmly in the driver’s seat and all but secure his team’s victory.
Lincoln led 1-0 at half-time through Alex Woodyard’s terrific 22-yard blast before the floodgates opened after the break.
The hosts doubled their advantage just after the hour when Rhead intercepted Parkes’ tight pass to Lambe and passed to midfielder Alex Woodyard, who calmly found the back of the net.
Rhead then went from provider to scorer when he grabbed Lincoln’s third from the penalty spot before Lambe pulled one back.
However, Lincoln finished strongly, substitute Billy Knott scoring the goal of the game with a sublime long-range effort to restore the hosts’ three goal advantage.
Lambe and his team-mates created plenty of chances, which they failed to capitalise on and ultimately paid the price.
“We created very good opportunities to score goals at influential times but we didn’t make them count,” Keith Curle, the Carlisle manager, said. “We had one just before half time and one just after that and, if we’d put them away, it could have given us a springboard.”
The defeat snapped Carlisle’s two-game winning streak after recording back-to-back league victories over Cambridge United and Cheltenham Town.
Their second league defeat of the campaign saw them drop from seventh to eleventh.
Lambe and his team-mates are back in action tomorrow away to Morecambe in the Checkatrade Trophy.
