Nahki Wells’s prospects at Huddersfield Town look increasingly in doubt after head coach David Wagner said he had “an honest conversation” with the Bermuda forward over his future.

Sky Bet Championship sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United are understood to be keen on signing the striker, who is in the final year of his contract with Wagner open to any serious bids.

Wells was a key part in Huddersfield’s promotion from the Championship last season, but has fallen down the pecking order at the John Smith’s Stadium following the arrival of record signing Steve Mounié and Laurent Depoitre.

Huddersfield have made a fantastic start to their first Premier League season, in Wells’s absence, sitting second in the table after winning their first two games.

Mounié scored twice on his debut in their 3-0 victory away to Crystal Palace on the opening weekend of the campaign and Aaron Mooy scored a sumptuous winner in their 1-0 defeat of Newcastle United at John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday.

Wells recently had surgery for an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since the preseason.

“First of all I am very happy that the small surgery Nahki had was successful and very happy the medical department tell me he will be back in four to six weeks,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner.

“He will be back as normal after the international break is finished and that is good news.

“The scenario we have now is that we have high quality in our offensive line, so I am open to speak if there are any serious offers for him.

“Nahki is totally aware of the situation. I had an honest conversation with him about his future in the football club and now we will see what serious offers come on the table.”

Wells, previously the club’s record signing at £1.3 million from Bradford City in January 2014, scored ten goals in 47 appearances last season and has netted 49 overall in 153 appearances for the Terriers.

As well as Wolves and Leeds, Hull City, Birmingham City, Reading and Burnley are also understood to be keeping tabs on Wells, who is valued at around £10 million by Huddersfield.
