Some 150 teachers turned out last night to elect new leaders in their union.

Dellwood Middle School teacher Anthony Wolffe has become the new president of the Bermuda Union of Teachers.

Mr. Wolffe, who has been vice president of the BUT for at least five years and acting president recently, defeated CedarBridge Academy deputy principal Freddie Evans for the post.

Mr. Wolffe replaces BUT president Michael Charles who became general secretary of the union last month after the resignation of Milton Scott who has been appointed as Minister without portfolio and Government Senate Leader.

Mr. Wolffe could not be reached for comment last night. But Mr. Charles said he was confident that Mr. Wolffe would be an effective president.

"Mr. Wolffe has been vice president for some time and acting president for the past few weeks,'' he noted, "so it's nothing new to him. Now he has the mandate to carry out the wishes of the membership.'' Also elected were: Norma Smith, vice president, Diana Dill, treasurer, and Angel Heyliger, recording secretary.

The following were elected as representatives of the primary, middle and senior school levels at the BUT's AGM at CedarBridge: Selected to represent the primary school level were Yvonne Cooper of Port Royal Primary, Carlton Johnson of Prospect Primary, Renee Heyliger of Somerset Primary, and Stephen Daniels of Francis Patton; Representatives of middle schools are Derek Adams of Spice Valley Middle School and Robert Edwards of the Middle School at Sandys; and elected for the senior school level were Joseph Robinson and Lovitta Foggo, both of CedarBridge.

Spice Valley Middle School deputy principal Earl Hart was elected as the administrative representative to the union; Carolyn Davis of Warwick Pre-school as paraprofessional representative; Kennette Smith of Berkeley Institute as counsellor/guidance representative, Ursula Kennedy of Orange Valley School for special schools; and Rosemarie Crichlow of St. John's Pre-school for pre-schools.
