St. George's end winless streak
One would have to go back a few years to find the last time St. George's beat Boulevard.
But that was not necessarily what put the smiles on the faces of their players and the supporters at the final whistle at Wellington Oval.
It could have been for any number of reasons; the manner in which the win was achieved or the fact that the team has revived its hopes of a first Martonmere Cup spot next season. During the first half at least, the St. George's six-game winless streak looked like extending to seven as patched-up Boulevard played the better football despite being without five starters. However, the visitors were undone by complacency in the second half as St. George's hit back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win through late goals from Carlos Greaves and Donald Whitfield. Boulevard came into this match without defenders Dean Boyles, Wayne Richardson and Albert Caisey and with Danny Crockwell replacing Lynn Tucker in goal. And despite also being without the likes of Herbie Bascome and captain Dwight Warren, they looked the more fluent of the two teams in the first half. It was no surprise when Boulevard took the lead in the 32nd minute through Clinton Caisey when a move down the right by Vincent Tuzo saw him lay on a perfect cross to the near post where Caisey got the ball under control before drilling a shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards. A more determined St. George's team emerged in the second half as, inside the first minute, Greaves broke through on the left on a counter-attack, cut in and unleashed a shot that keeper Crockwell blocked with his legs at the near post after narrowing the angle. St. George's replaced Walker with 16-year-old Chae Simmons in the 65th minute and his non-stop running in midfield -- despite being the smallest player on the field -- seemed to inspire his teammates. The long awaited equaliser came in the 72nd minute when Marlon Outerbridge supplied the cross from the right after a good run and Greaves scored from close range. The better chances after that fell to St. George's as Boulevard's defence was kept under pressure. Sloppy defending in the 81st minute saw the ball bounce through the Boulevard defence but Gregg Foggo's volley was deflected for a corner. An injury to Clinton Caisey held up the game for a few minutes before he was stretchered off with a leg injury in the 86th minute to be replaced by Garon Smith. However, the decision to move Neil Robinson from fullback to midfield backfired as just two minutes later the St.
George's winner through a move down the left side now occupied by Smith.
Defender Quinton Francis intercepted a pass from substitute Shane Grant on the halfway line, raced down the flank and then laid on a cross for Whitfield to poke the ball past keeper Danny Crockwell from inside the penalty area. And rather than go on the defensive in the closing minutes which included four minutes of injury time, St. George's kept attacking and nearly added a third in the first minute of injury time when Whitfield's shot from a Greaves cross brought off a brilliant save from Crockwell.
