Great Sound, the Bermudian-owned thoroughbred, shed his maiden tag in his first race at the Dribuild Stakes at Chepstow Racecourse on Tuesday.

Sent off as a 3-1 third favourite, the horse won the class 5 race for three-year-olds — which was held over eight furlongs — with a strong display of stamina.

Great Sound, who was ridden by Fran Berry, exceeded the expectations of trainer John Gosden.

After a slow start the horse began to work his way into a stronger position but was still well behind the leaders three furlongs out.

Berry reached for the whip to keep the horse on task and with two furlongs to go Great Sound was making steady progress and swooped past the leaders in the final furlong to win by a comfortable margin.

“Fran was obviously delighted with the effort this afternoon once your colt had the chance to straighten up, organise himself and knuckle down to the task, saying he ‘responded well to the first back hand and from then I thought he could reel them in’,” read an e-mail sent to the horse’s owners from Highclere, the racing syndicate in Berkshire that oversees the BTR operation.

“Fran went on to say he is a nice colt who will stay all day, as he has a great attitude and is very clean winded.

“But most importantly he is still learning what racing is all about and will only continue to improve with more time and racing in the future.”

The race was worth £3,234 to Great Sound’s handlers. BTR own several island-themed horses including Johnny Barnes, Castle Harbour and Horseshoe Bay.
