Tempest, an exhibition by Rebecca Hanson, opens at the Rock Island Coffee tomorrow evening.Miss Hanson’s show is made up of two main collections, the Tempest Collection and the Anarchist Collection. The Tempest Collection looks at past hurricanes that have affected the Island.“I focused on the beauty within the storm,” she said.“I used bright Bermuda colours to capture the hurricane’s inherent energy. For me, the shapes you find in nature are always beautiful, symmetrical and simple.“I was on the Island when Fabian hit and it was devastating you can see from the painting how huge the storm was and how small Bermuda is in comparison.“But beyond the chaos, there is an incredible calm and beauty within the storm that I hope to have captured in the work.”The Anarchist Collection deals with everyday woes.“Using a cartoon style and bright colours the situations are inspired by life in Bermuda. I hope the viewer can relate to the situation and find the humour in it,” she said.A painting that doesn’t fit into either collection is that of a bright yellow sunflower. This painting will be offered in a silent auction and half the proceeds will go to the Sunshine League Children’s Home.“As a Bermudian, I feel a responsibility towards the children of our community and support the Sunshine League in their mission statement to provide ‘quality, therapeutic care to displaced children, and promote traditional family values’,” Miss Hanson said.“The future of our Island is in the children, and it is imperative that the less fortunate have somewhere safe to go where they can learn the life skills to become successful adults.”The opening runs 6pm until 7.30pm. The exhibit will remain up for two months.Useful website: www.rebeccahansonart.com.
